Top 5 Places to Shop for Petites

Here are some of my favourite places to shop for petite friendly clothes!

Banana Republic

Price Range: $$$  – definitely higher price range but you get what you pay for? Banana Republic always has sales going on, so I never buy anything full price!

Fit:  The fit for Banana Republic items are always a hit or miss for me. Its either the most perfect item ever or just not working at all. Their dresses tend to fit really slim in the waist and chest but flare out in the hips way more than needed for me. I am more of a straight up and down kinda gal. There old sloan pants are 10/10, the new sloan pants are a 6.5/10. Not many places sell 00P or XXS so I always come back!

Style: They have trendy pieces and basics. Marissa Webb use to be the Creative Director for Banana Republic and I absolutely love her work. Occasionally I do find pieces I really like. These days I find Banana does a lot of bold patterns and ruffles. So a lot feminine pieces.

Aritzia

Price Range: $$$ Aritiza is for sure a pricy brand but I think a lot of their pieces are high quality and I always get good wear out of them. They have end of season sales so I usually stock up then.

Fit: Aritzia does not have a petite line however they sell smaller sizes that I am able to make it work. They sell sizes as small as XXXS. I love their cami’s as they are great under a blazer. I have a lot of their T shirts too as they have the best cuts. All my coats and jackets are also from Aritzia!

Style: The style is very much minimalistic. They sell a lot of basics and pieces that are simple. The “Aritzia girl” is very much a cool and chic girl.

H&M

Price Range: $ to $$ –  H&M has super affordable pieces as well as pieces that are more expensive.

Fit: The fit at H&M is generally slimmer and smaller. I think it is due to the target demographic. More younger people shop here. Their size 2 fits me and I usually wear a size 00-0 at other places. Sometimes the 2 is even too small for me!

Style: More trendy clothes and graphics here but they do have a business professional section. I wouldn’t say the quality is completely there as H&M is considered more of a fast fashion brand but I do find cute things here. Their dresses and skirts fit me nicely. Nipped in the waist and slim through the hips.

Top Shop (Bay)

Price Range: $$ to $$$ – Their pieces are pretty pricy for what it is. However they do sell petite clothing which I will spend more for any day!

Fit: I always buy jeans from Top Shop, they understand that in a pair of jeans, that its not just about the length of pants it is about the overall fit. They nip in the ankles creating a real skinny jean unlike other brands where their “crop fit”, “ankle fit” or “petite friendly” jeans are more straight leg than skinny.

Style: They have unique pieces that are trendy as well as elevated basics.

Sole Society

Price Range: $$ – They sell heels that are both comfortable and cute for a reasonable price! My personal favourite the “Tamara” is $70 USD. They also have sales where you can get some of their heels for around $40-50 USD

Fit: I have small feet and not a lot of stores carry a 5! Certain styles are even carried in a  4 or 4.5!

Style: They have trendy shoes and heels that are 2.5 inches! I personally cannot do heels that are any taller as they aren’t comfortable for me. Finding cute heels at 2.5 inches is hard but Sole Society always has them!

Finding the Perfect Petite Friendly Pair of Trousers Part 1

As someone who works in a business professional environment. I wear a lot of dress pants and trousers. However, finding the perfect pair has been the biggest challenge of all. As you know, I wear the Sloan fit ankle fit pants from Banana Republic a lot. However in the past year they have the changed the fit. It is now looser in the waist, not as skinny in the calf and ankle and on me there is fabric bunching around the crotch. Not cute at all! I keep buying the sloan pants hoping that they have changed the design back to what they were before but sadly that is not the case. I still wear the new sloan fit occasionally but it is not as flattering on me as I would wish. It is just too big now and not as fitted! Lately I have been on a mission to try some other “petite” friendly options in hopes I can find an alternative to the Sloan pants. For those who don’t know I wear a 00P in the old Sloan fit. Inseam is around 26-27 for full length pants. I also have quite slim calfs and ankles.

I have bought the following pairs of pants and have tried them on. Here are my thoughts on them.

Mid Rise All-New Harper Pants for Women – Old Navy (Size 0P, $25 CAD, regular price $39.94 CAD)

Info from the website

  • New & improved slimmer fit provides a more tailored appearance.
  • Mid-Rise sits just below waist.
  • Fitted through hip and thigh.
  • Slightly tapered leg.
  • 24 1/2″ inseam.

This pair is more of a relaxed fit. Looser fit and cropped. Reviews said the pants ran small which I agree in the sense that the waist surprisingly fit for me. Usually Old Navy clothes fit quite large for me. Like expected it was too loose for me in the legs, I was swimming in the extra fabric. I would have also liked it to be maybe an inch or 2 shorter, on me it hit me at a weird place around my ankle and was not flattering. Another note is that the fabric is cotton. Not a dress pant material, it felt a little cheap to me. I wouldn’t say this is an office pant but a weekend pant. I wanted to make it work however will most likely be returning this.

Bi-stretch Skinny Ankle Pant – Gap (Size 00P, $50 CAD, regular price 79.95 CAD)

First thing I noticed about the Bi-stretch line is that the fabric used is quite rough and scratchy. Maybe with some fabric softener it might change. This pair hit me on the lower half of my ankle, a little longer than I would have liked. The waist fit me, however once again it was quite loose in the upper and lower legs. The fit was not skinny on me either, as it was more of a straight leg fit. These pants made me look shorter and kinda frumpy!  Most likely will not be keeping these either.

Info from website

  • Skinny through the hip and thigh.
  • Mid rise.
  • Skinny leg opening skims the ankle.
  • Inseams: regular 28″/71 cm, tall 32″/81 cm, petite 25″/63.5 cm.

Bi-stretch Ankle Crop Pant – Gap (Size 00P, $40 CAD, regular price $69.95 CAD)

Out of all the pairs this one is the only one I might keep. It isn’t perfect but maybe with a quick wash and high in the dryer it might shrink and be more wearable. (I always use to put my sloan pants from banana republic in the wash and high heat in the dryer and then they were the perfect fit – no longer the case with the new sloan pants). The waist fit in these pants and the length of these were more ideal for me. However once again they are like straight fit pants on me. There is no tapering around the ankle.

Info from website

  • Skinny through the hip and thigh.
  • Mid rise
  • Skinny leg opening skims the ankle.
  • Inseam: regular 25.5″/65 cm, tall 27.5″/70 cm, petite 24″/61 cm.

Sloan Fit Pants Review – Banana Republic

IMG_4271

As someone who is petite, finding the right pair of pants is a difficult task. I have to worry about the length of the pants, the pant opening, waist and slimness through the thighs and calfs. Proportions are extremely important. I am always on the hunt for petite friendly pants that are low maintenance (don’t need to get them dry cleaned). If anyone has any suggestions please tell me!

The Sloan fit pant from Banana republic has been my favourite and go to pants. However they have changed the fit over the years and the newer fit is slightly bigger and less skinny which is disappointing as it does not fit me as well and not as flattering. But something to note is that I like my pants super tight! So my girls who like a slightly looser and relaxed fit would maybe like the new Sloan better.

Over the years I have collected an impressive amount of Sloan pants, my collection is pushing 20 pairs these days but these are the only dress pants I own.  However, I only wear about 10 of them on a regular basis due to half my collection is the old sloan fit and half is the new sloan fit. They average around $110-$130 CAD however Banana Republic always has sales so never pay full price! They always have anywhere from 30-50% off regular price items as well as 40-60% off clearance items. So just look out for those sales to get the pants at a good price!

On the labels of the Sloan pants it says dry clean. Personally I have never dry cleaned them. I wash them in cold water and then dry on medium to high. When I first buy the Sloan pants I generally put them on high in the dryer to shrink them to get the fit I want. They shrink a decent amount. The fabric of them are extremely comfortable they have a good amount of stretch and are thick enough to still have some shape.
